Catholic News

  • This is sad: Kathleen McChesney, executive director of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office of Child and Youth Protection says her office has received reports of 1,092 new reports of sexual abuse within the church. The allegations are made against 756 priests.

  • In a somewhat-related story, a conservative Catholic activist group is organizing a "Collection Basket Strike" against Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony. We can't endorse any group that links pedophilia to homosexuality, but we'll be curious to see if the protest takes off.

  • And in a striking development, an Altoona-area priest has filed a lawsuit against his own diocese, alleged sexual abuse in one of its schools. The diocese acknowledges that some priests have themselves been victims, but says that so far, none of them has chosen to sue the church.

  • Inside baseball, Vatican style, and an interesting report on John Paul II's emotional connection to the Virgin of Fatima here.

  • A report on one challenge faced in bring an autistic child up Catholic here, and coincidentally, another report on raising an autistic child, this time as Amish, here. (The second link is also interesting in that the child's parents are converts to the plain life. Shows off some of the complexity of that sect. Plus, pastordan and Mrs. Pastor actually met this family at the grocery store the other night.) Here's a family picture, from the paper:
